Dr. A. Frederick Uhler, son of Lovene Allen Uhler and Edna Maude Beers Uhler died January 18, 2014 at his home in Forks Township. Born September 3, 1922 in Easton, he graduated from Easton High School Class of 1939 and subsequently from Pennsylvania State College of Optometry. He served in the Medical Corps of the Army Air Corp during WWII. He practiced optometry in Washington NJ for over thirty years. He took great pleasure in flying his Piper Cherokee out of Easton's Braden's Airport. During his tenure on the Washington Township Board of Education, the board oversaw construction of Brass Castle School. For five years he served as President of a new Board of Education involved in the location, design and construction of the Warren Hills Regional High School. He advocated for the inclusion of an auditorium which came to be used for school and community events. As President of the Washington Kiwanis Club 1970 - 71 he brought the Fred Waring Orchestra to a sold out performance at the new auditorium. He served as Division Seventeen Lieutenant Governor of the Kiwanis Club of New Jersey from 1976-77. In 2012 he was honored with the George F. Hixson Fellowship, one of the Kiwanis' highest honors, by Kiwanis International. After his retirement he was given the Preservationist of the Year Award by Historic Easton, Inc. for his work restoring the clock of the former Zion Lutheran Church. He and his wife Frances spent twenty years in Aspen, Colorado where they enjoyed skiing and he volunteered with the Aspen Historical Society. He was chosen as Pitkin County Senior Volunteer of the Year for his work on the Marolt Silver Mining Property and for leading bicycle trips in the area for seniors. He is survived by his wife of seventy-one years, Frances Mertz, of Easton, brother Roger Uhler (Mimzie) of Chester Springs, PA, children Linda O'Brien of Blacksburg, VA, Allen Uhler (Debra MacKinnon) of Spring Lake, NJ, and Holly Griffith (Mark) of Newport, TN, and six grandchildren. A daughter, Joncie Lee preceded him in death. Memorials may be sent to ProJeCt of Easton or the Forks Township Historical Society. The family will receive friends Saturday, January 25th from two to four o'clock at Green Pond (Calvary) United Methodist Church 4411 Green Pond Road, Easton.
