Bernard T. Metz, 96, of Belfast, passed away on Thursday, December 4, 2014 in his home. He was the beloved husband of Dorothy "Dolly" Metz who passed away on May 24, 2009. Bernard was born on April 18, 1918 in Nazareth, a son of the late Clarence and Florence Cawley Metz. He graduated from Nazareth High School, class of 1936 and served with the U S Air Force during WWII. While he served in the Air Force, Bernard attended Wake Forrest College, the University of Cincinnati and Denver, Colorado School of Aircraft Armament where he was one of four students accepted for the pilot training program. Early in life, Bernard worked for his uncle's hotel in Bethlehem serving as assistant manager as well as managing the transportation terminal for both local and interstate travel. Following three years in the Air Force, Bernard returned home, acquired his pilot's license, and worked at Lehigh Lumber where he held positions as secretary, treasure and manager until his retirement in 1984. He was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church of Belfast. Bernard is survived by nephews, nieces and cousins. He was predeceased by two brothers; Elmo and Elwood and one sister; Dorothy Flick. Family and friends are invited to call on Monday, December 8, from 10-11 am in the Schmidt Funeral Home, 407 Belvidere St., Nazareth. Funeral services will follow at 11 am in the funeral home with Pastor Paul A. Milligan presiding. Burial will be in Belfast Union Cemetery. Memorials in Bernard's memory may be offered to the charity of one's choice.
