Obituary

Donald Clarence "Don" Groner, 92, formerly of Wind Gap, passed away Thursday, September 10, 2015. He was the beloved husband of the late Gloria June (Trach, Gold) Groner who died in August, 2013. Born on March 17, 1925 in Bangor, he was a son of the late Clarence "Sox" Pearson Groner and Hazel Adele (LaBarre) Groner. Don graduated from Bangor High School in 1940, and worked as a slate cutter for a local quarry and for Kaiser Hosiery Mill in Bangor. He then enlisted in the U.S. Navy and honorably served his country for 3 ½ years during WWII aboard the U.S.S. Independence aircraft carrier, attaining the rank of Aviation Machinist Mate 2/C. After leaving the service, Don worked for RCA in Camden, NJ, for a short time, and later as a pump assembler in the Cameron Pump Division at Ingersoll Rand in Phillipsburg, NJ, from where he retired in 1986. Don was a musician who played the trumpet in the band on board the ship while serving in the military, and in small groups around the Slate Belt area and Pocono's, ending his musical career after 12 years with the Bernie Parsons Band. He continued to play both the trumpet and organ for his own enjoyment. Don was a former member of St. Luke's United Church of Christ in Belfast. He and his wife Gloria also spent many years volunteering at the Plainfield Volunteer Fire Company and the Slate Belt Rehabilitation Center. Don was a loving father to his children Paula J. Wilkinson (Fred) of Blackwood, NJ, and Kevin S Groner of Sarasota, FL, and his step-children Bonnie Gold LeBold (Andy) of Wailea, HI, and Rick Gold (Lynne) of York, PA. He was a loving grandfather to Scott (Lisa), Jeffrey, Christopher (Megan), Jason (Lisa), Heather (Ken), Kathryn, and Melissa, and to his 8 great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Paul Woodward Groner and Charles "Chaney" Groner. Relatives and friends are invited to call from 1:30 - 2:00 pm on Sunday, October 11, 2015, at the Schmidt Funeral Home, 407 Belvidere Street, Nazareth, PA. A Memorial Service will begin at 2:00 pm at the funeral home with Richard Lieberman officiating. Burial will follow at Belfast Union Cemetery.
