Doris A. Anthony's Obituary
Doris A. Anthony, formerly of Allentown, passed away peacefully on March 3, 2018 at the Lutheran Home in Topton. Born in Wilson Boro, she was the daughter of Elwood G. Knauss and Marie Emma Oplinger Knauss.
Doris was a graduate of Wilson High School. She ultimately went on to pursue a career in nursing, fulfilling a life-long goal when she graduated with the first class of Licensed Practical Nurses at St. Luke's Hospital. She married Charles J. Anthony in 1960, and remained a loving devoted wife for 52 years until his passing in 2013. She put her career on hold to devote all of her attention to raising her two children, a devotion which remained a priority for the balance of her life. Nursing however was a true calling, one to which she would eventually return. Doris re-entered the work force as a geriatric nurse for Eastwood Convalescent Home for six years before transitioning to the medical surgical oncology unit at Easton Hospital. She remained in medical surgical oncology for 22 years where she cared for patients, many of whom were terminally ill. It was a career which she found both incredibly challenging and profoundly rewarding. She was an avid reader, devouring books on a multitude of subjects. She was curious to learn about other cultures and wildlife, and kept up to date on the latest medical research and developments in nursing. She also enjoyed sketching and drawing landscapes and cartoons. She use to say, "I always wanted to be either a nurse or an artist/cartoonist. Maybe I can still do both, after all Grandma Moses didn't start painting until she was 78."
Doris was predeceased by her husband, Charles J. Anthony, and her best buddy Xeno, a lab terrier border collie mix. She is survived by her sons, Michael J. Anthony of Allentown, and Matthew T. Anthony of Philadelphia; brothers, George Knauss and his wife Caroline (Cookie) Knauss of Tatamy, and Roger Knauss; sister-in-law Judith Ruch of Bethlehem; and nieces, Jennifer Knauss Hauck and her husband Mark Hauck of Coatesville, and Amy Edelman and her husband Gary Edelman of Wind Gap.
Friends are invited to a viewing on Thursday, March 8, from 6 to 8 pm, and Friday, March 9 from 11 to noon in the Schmidt Funeral Home, 407 Belvidere St., Nazareth. The funeral service will begin Friday at 12 noon. Doris will be laid to rest at Cedar Hill Memorial Park in Allentown.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be offered to Doris Anthony Compassionate Care Nursing Scholarship Fund in care of the funeral home.
