Wind Gap
Edna Mae Schaffer, 89, of Wind Gap, passed away Wednesday, November 13, 2024 in Lehigh Valley Hospital, Hecktown Oaks. She was the devoted wife of 64 years to Richard Schaffer who passed away on July 18, 2018.
Born March 12, 1935 in East Stroudsburg, she was a daughter of the late Ernest Williams Jr. and Mary Hartman Williams. She grew up on a farm, spending her youth riding horses, tending to the piglets and chickens, catching frogs and running around Saylor's Lake with her 10 siblings; she was the last living Williams sibling. She had 7 sisters and 3 brothers (Helen Lockard, Ada Beegle, Agnes Hennet, Paul Williams, Peg Faulstick, Norman Williams, Mary Jane Lucrezi, Jean Scott, Ruth Yetter, and Ernest Williams).
Edna Mae left school after the 8th grade to help provide for her family in local textile factories. She met Richard up at Saylor's Lake when she was 18 and they started their family and moved to Pen Argyl. She enjoyed cooking and baking German and Pennsylvania Dutch fare and caring for their daughters. Edna Mae cared for many children in her home for well over two decades. She was an avid quilter and very talented embroiderer and member of the Pocono Mountain Quilt Guild. At the age of 80, she became an entrepreneur and sold her embroidered tea towels with the help of her daughter Barbara at the following gift shops: Chic Farmhouse in Saylorsburg, Quiet Valley Historical Living Farm, and a gift shop in Lititz, PA. She was very proud of her needlework and the joy that it brought to others.
She is survived by 3 daughters; Barbara(Bill) Wenton, Deborah(Paul) Finken, and Rebecca Catino. As well as grandchildren; Jared(Nicole) Pennington, Anthony(Bridgette) Catino and Stephanie (Jake Baldini) Catino, step-grandson Jaret Wenton and 8 great-granddaughters.
Along with her parents, siblings, and husband, Edna Mae was predeceased by her son-in-law Ralph Catino, step-grandson Jason Wenton and his wife Georgette Wenton.
Private Graveside Services will be held in Fairview Cemetery, Pen Argyl.
