Obituary

Edward W. Follweiler, 87, of Nazareth, passed away early Tuesday morning, February 25, 2014 in St. Luke's Hospital, Anderson Campus. He was the husband of Helen Herman Follweiler. Together they celebrated 65 years of marriage on August 13. BORN: Ed was born June 18, 1926 in Nazareth, a son of the late Robert Follweiler and Dorothy Nagle Follweiler Steiner. PERSONAL: He attended Nazareth High School and honorably served in the U.S. Navy as an electricians mate from 1943-1947 aboard the USS Tarawa. Ed retired as a foreman for the Hercules Cement Co. in Stockertown. Later he worked for Harvey Miller Trucking in Moorestown. He served as zoning officer for the Borough of Nazareth and early in life was a member of the civil defense team, a volunteer group that monitored air raids during the war, under the supervision of the late Caddy Jones. He was the "go to" guy for his family; requests for help were never an imposition. In later years, after a stroke kept him homebound, Ed was content to be surrounded by those he loved. MEMBERSHIPS: He was of the Protestant faith. Ed was a life member of the VFW and a member and past commander of the Harold V. Knecht American Legion Post #415, both in Nazareth, the 40et8, and the Whitfield Lodge #622 F&AM. SURVIVORS: Along with his beloved wife Helen, he is survived by his only child, daughter Jane A. Follweiler of Nazareth; one sister, Kathryn Werner of Washington Twp; and several nieces and nephews, as well as his faithful companion, the family's cocker spaniel Casey. Ed was predeceased by one brother, Robert G. I. Follweiler. SERVICES: Funeral services will be held on Saturday, at 11:00 am in the Schmidt Funeral Home, 407 Belvidere St., Nazareth, with the Rev. David B. Schaeffer presiding. Relatives and friends are invited to call Saturday morning from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. in the funeral home. Burial will follow in Holy Family Cemetery. MEMORIALS: Memorials in Ed's name may be offered to Holy Family School, 17 N. Convent Ave., Nazareth, PA 18064, or to Safe Harbor, 536 Bushkill Dr., Easton, PA 18042.
