Obituary

On Saturday, August 27, 2022, Elaine Lewis passed away at Moravian Hall Square. Elaine, the daughter of A. Ralph and Carolyn Rutherford Cornnell, was born and raised in Edmeston, NY. She graduated from Edmeston Central School, as class valedictorian and entered the School of Nursing at Syracuse University, where she met George Lewis. While George worked on his Industrial Engineer degree, Elaine graduated and began work at Crouse Memorial Hospital in Syracuse. After George's graduation, they married, and moved to York, where Elaine worked at York Hospital. They later moved to Wyomissing, PA, and then to Old Orchard in Palmer Township. She resumed her nursing career at Warren Hospital in Phillipsburg, NJ until her retirement. In 2005, Elaine and George found a new home at Moravian Hall Square in Nazareth, frequently remarking to each other what a good decision they had made. They enjoyed the caring and friendly atmosphere created by the residents and staff.

Elaine was a life-long reader, enjoyed bowling, music, gardening, and watching Jeopardy. She was an avid crafter, making Christmas decorations, making lace-edged baby blankets and crocheting Barbie Doll clothes. But her two passions were vacationing on Dalhousie Lake in Canada and playing Scrabble! She loved her children and grandchildren. She baked dozens of cookies and distributed the baked treats at holidays. She loved to write and receive letters. Elaine was active in her church, was a volunteer with the Girl Scouts and delivered for Meals on Wheels.

Elaine is survived by her husband of 70 years, George, her brother Allan Cornnell, her three children (Linda, David, and Amy), nine grandchildren (Jeremy, Erin, Christine, Tim, Johnna, Rachel, Kate, Nate and Paige), and eight great-grandchildren. She is predeceased by her sister, Marilyn (Cornnell) Noll.

A private service for the family will be held on Thursday, September 1 at Schmidt Funeral Home in Nazareth, PA. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Good Samaritan Fund at Morningstar Living at 175 W. North Street, Nazareth, PA 18064. The Good Samaritan Fund provides assistance to residents in need.
