Obituary

Esther R. Smith, 97, formerly of Wind Gap, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday morning, September 19, 2018, at Chandler Estates, Plainfield Township. She was the wife of the late Charles Smith who passed away in 1992.

Born September 29, 1920 in Wind Gap, she was a daughter of the late George and Maggie Tanner Melvin. Esther was a graduate of Pen Argyl High School and worked for various blouse mills in the Slate Belt, retiring from Valerie Fashions.  She was a member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Plainfield Township and UNITE.

In her spare time, Esther enjoyed reading and was always ready for a good card game, which she "played to win". But her passion was to crochet. Through the years, Esther volunteered her time creating hundreds of beautiful shawls, lap robes, hats and newborn sweater and hat sets for St. Peter's church, as well as the Slate Belt Senior Center.

Esther is survived by 2 daughters; Marlene Tocket and her husband Thomas of Wind Gap, and Judith Raines of Pen Argyl, 4 grandchildren; Timothy Tocket and his wife Jennifer, Todd Tocket and his wife Amy, Randall Raines and Pamela Raines, 6 great-grandchildren; Ashley Gower and her husband Martin, Peter, Jared, Brandon, Malyssa and Jacob, and 1 great-great-grandson Zachary. She was predeceased by brothers, George and Stanley; and sister, Alice Kibler.
Friends are invited to a viewing on Saturday, September 22, 2018 from 10-11 am in the Schmidt Funeral Home, 202 West St. Wind Gap, with a funeral service to follow at 11 am.
