Obituary

Evelyn Mae Shankweiler, 99, formerly of Nazareth, passed away on Thursday, April 7, 2016 at Moravian Village in Bethlehem. She was the wife of the late Kenneth S. Shankweiler with whom she shared 52 years of marriage at the time of his passing in August, 1992.

Born December 15, 1916 in Nazareth, she was a daughter of the late Jennie (Troxell) and Raymond J. Christman, Sr.

Evelyn graduated from Nazareth High School in 1934, where she received the nickname "Moxie". Throughout her life she served her church, community and country. Evelyn served as a Sunday School teacher and Choir Mother for the children's choir, as well as cooking many meals for the church's men's group. As an active scout leader, she organized cookie drives and Camp Winding Creek summer camps in Stockertown. During WWII, she contributed to the war effort by volunteering for the Federal Civil Defense Agency as a plane spotter from the Indian Tower in Nazareth. She was employed as a cafeteria manager for more than 25 years by the Nazareth Area School District, from where she retired in 1979.

Since baptism, Evelyn was a member of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Nazareth. She served as past President of the Nazareth Jr. and Sr. Women's Club, and was a life-long member of the Order of the Eastern Star Chapter 252.

A mother's love is eternal. Evelyn is survived by two daughters, Judith A. Merola of Bethlehem, and Donna L. Keppel and her husband Edward of Florida; four grandchildren, Jill Gerardo (James), Jenna Trotzer (Daniel), Kenneth Keppel (Erin) and Kate Silva (David); and seven great-grands, Riley, Reese, Owen, Olive, Jackson, Christopher and Nicholas. Also surviving are two brothers, Edward Christman, Sr., and Raymond Christman, Jr. (Irene), a sister Dorothy Duby, and a sister-in-law, Claire Boyle. In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by a sister Elaine Christman

Relatives and friends are invited to call on Tuesday, April 12, from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m., at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, 200 South Broad Street, Nazareth, PA, 18064. A funeral service will begin at 11:00 a.m. in the Church with the Rev. David B. Schaeffer officiating. Burial will follow in Hope Cemetery, Hecktown.
