Obituary

Herbert R. "Herbie" Fehnel, 90, of Palmer Township, passed away Saturday, December 22, 2012 at his residence with his loving family by his side. BORN: April 4, 1922, in Palmer Township, he was the son of the late Owen P. and Mabel Kindt Fehnel. He and his wife, the former Jean Herster, met roller skating at Bushkill Park. Together they shared 65 years of marriage prior to her passing in January of 2011. PERSONAL: Herbie was a life long resident of Palmer Township. He was born, lived and then died, at the farm, his family homestead. He loved working the land and tending to the farm animals. His enduring vitality was enriched by his work ethic and having been surrounded by a loving family. Herbie was a graduate of Easton High School, class of 1940. In addition to his farm work, he was also employed as a bus driver for the Easton Area School District. A long time volunteer fireman, for Palmer Township, Herbie received the "Service to Mankind Award" presented by the Sertoma Club, in 1990, for an act of heroism. In addition to spending time with family, he and his wife enjoyed trips to Las Vegas. MEMBERSHIPS: He was a social member of Brown and Lynch American Legion Post 9, the Four County Fireman's Association, and the Northampton Farm Bureau Co-op, in Tatamy, where he previously served on the board. He was a member of Arndt's Lutheran Church, Easton. SURVIVORS: His devoted and loving family, one niece, Phyllis Smith Petrilak of Palmer Township; great-niece, Lisa VanBuskirk and her husband, Kevin Jr. of Plainfield Township; extended family and caregivers, great-nieces, Jody Allen and her husband Bob and Krystle Allen all of Bethlehem; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife, he was pre-deceased by his sister Lillian "Mia" Smith and her husband Rudolph "Rudy," nephew David Smith and nephew in-law, Charles "Chot" Petrilak. SERVICES: A funeral service will be held at 11:00am, Friday in the Schmidt Funeral Home, PC, 407 Belvidere St., Nazareth. Relatives and friends are invited to call 6:00 - 8:00pm Thursday evening and 10:00 till 11:00am Friday in the funeral home. Burial will be held, following services, at Northampton Memorial Shrine, Palmer Township. MEMORIALS: In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be offered to Compassionate Care Hospice, 363 South Rt. 100, Allentown, PA 18106 or to the charity of one's choice.
