Obituary

James Richard Feather, 88, of Bushkill Township, passed away on Friday, December 20, 2019 in St. Luke's Anderson Campus. He was the loving husband of the late Bertha Stouffer Feather who died June 9, 2019.

James is survived by daughter, Cynthia Ann Scullion and her husband William of York, PA, and their sons, Brian Scullion and his wife Shannon, and Jeremy Scullion, all of Pittsburgh, PA; and daughter, Donna Jean Feather of Annapolis, MD. He is predeceased by his sister, Margaret Bagaason; his twin brother, John Feather, and brother, Frank Feather.

Born April 22, 1931 in Altoona, he was a son of the late Russell C. and Helen Dougherty Feather, and stepmother Eunice Feather.

He was a graduate of Altoona Senior High School Class of 1949, Shippensburg State Teacher's College in 1953 with a BS in Business Education, Teacher's College of Columbia University with an MA in Business Education in 1958, and Lehigh University with an EdD in School Administration in 1976. James enlisted in the US Naval Air Reserves on January 13, 1951 and was commissioned in 1963 as a Lieutenant in Naval Intelligence, and retired as Lieutenant Commander in 1982 after 31 years of service. He served as a Business Education teacher with the South Middletown School District and the Gettysburg Area School District. James was employed by the Nazareth Area School District from 1966 - 1979, where he served as acting principal of the Junior High School and Assistant Superintendent of Schools. He also worked for the Bethlehem Area School District where he served from 1979 – 1980 as a Business Education teacher. James was also employed by NORWESCAP for 9 years as director of the Warren County Coordinated Transportation System, as well as working as an income tax preparer for H & R Block, retiring in 1999.

James was a member of Epworth United Methodist Church in Bethlehem since 1984 where he served as Sunday school teacher and treasurer of the building expansion fund, chairman of the finance committee, chairman of the outreach committee, chairman of the education commission, and certified lay speaker. He was involved in organizing and leading a number of county councils of PTA's in Adam's and Northampton counties, served as president of the Nazareth Lion's Club, and one term as president of the Nazareth Area Chamber of Commerce.

Relatives and friends are invited to a memorial service on Saturday, January 4, 2020 at 1 p.m. in Epworth United Methodist Church, 3245 Oakland Rd, Bethlehem, food and fellowship to follow. Arrangements are under the care of the Schmidt Funeral Home, 407 Belvidere St., Nazareth, PA.

In lieu of flowers, donations in James' name may be offered to EUMC Memorial Fund (EUMC PO Box 3107 Bethlehem PA 18017).
