Obituary

Jan Barbara Beer died peacefully on August 16, 2026, at the age of 99. She was well cared for in her last days by the staff at Moravian Hall Square in Nazareth where she resided for the past 11 years. The Family Pillars Hospice group greatly assisted her surviving children, David Warren Beer and Betsy Jane Beer during her time of transition to Heaven. She was looking forward to being with her husband of 53 years, Warren George, her daughter Susan Jan, her mom and dad Helen Louise and John Carlos Vaughan and all her friends and family who have gone before her.

Jan was born in Covington, KY in 1927. She attended Holmes High School in Covington, KY and Antioch College in Yellow Springs, OH where she met and married Warren (Buck) Beer, an Army Captain at the time in 1948. She was a good mother to her 3 children, Susan, David and Betsy. Her moves around the country and abroad were frequent while Buck was in the military, taking her to Washington, Texas, Illinois, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Italy, Germany, Georgia and Virginia.

In a new place, Jan sought out opportunities to volunteer in the community and remained close with her family and friends by writing many letters. Center Valley, PA became her home following Buck’s retirement. Once more, Jan sought volunteer opportunities in her community and Buck and Jan joined the Cathedral Church of the Nativity in 1967. She wore many hats in her active years in the parish, a Sunday school teacher, a greeter, and was most known for managing the church’s thrift shop ministry for over 40 years. Jan could listen well to anyone who cared to befriend her, and her friends were many throughout her long life. Her faith in God was steadfast throughout her life and her daily prayers for others and daily devotions uplifted her and others.

When Jan was 58, her mother Helen moved in with her and Buck. The 3 traveled often within the Elder Hostel program, attended church programs, and played bridge with friends getting along very well as a threesome. Once Buck died, Jan moved to Hellertown, PA and she and Helen carried on more like sisters until Helen died at 101 when Jan was 81. Jan was then very happy to enter the Moravian Hall Square community, which allowed her to give up driving and embrace senior living without the responsibilities of home ownership at age 84. She thrived there…. playing different games with different groups, helping out in the various neighborhoods, walking the grounds, reading quietly, and enjoying not having to cook!

She will be missed by many people including her son, David, his wife Vicki of Catasauqua, their 2 children Amanda Beer of Cementon and Jesse Beer (Clif Dameron) of Parkland, Florida. Her daughter Betsy of Denmark, ME and her 2 children, John (Isabella) Fitzsimmons of Covington, KY and Brian (Rhoeta) Fitzsimmons of Phoenix, AZ. Jan will be busy watching her 11 great grandchildren, Iris, Ry, John, Grant, Aaron, Brooks, Monica, Miriam, Brighid, Charlotte, and Leonie not on her Photospring device but in Heaven.

Jan’s body has been accepted for medical science study by Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine in Scranton. Her ashes will be interned in the Memorial Garden at the Cathedral Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem, PA at a later time.

Her memorial service will be held 11:00 AM, Saturday, September 5th at the Cathedral Church of the Nativity, 321 Wyandotte St., Bethlehem.
