Obituary

Jean Louise Kern Haupt, age 91, a life long resident of Nazareth, passed away on November 6, 2013, in St. Luke's Hospital, Fountain Hill. BORN: November 1, 1922 in Nazareth, she was a daughter of the late Edward H. and Edith C. Odenwelder Kern. PERSONAL: Jean graduated from Nazareth High School, where she was salutatorian of the Class of 1939. She also graduated from Bethlehem Business College, class of 1941, where she majored in secretarial and business. In 1947, she married Walter R. Haupt. Together they celebrated 55 years of marriage prior to his death in 2002. Earlier in life Jean held various secretarial positions with General Acceptance Corporation, Penn-Dixie Corporation, Harry Margolis Co. and Northampton County Court House. In 1950, Jean started her own accounting and tax preparation business. She opened her office on Main Street in Nazareth, and served the community until her retirement in 2002. She also held the position of Notary Public from 1953 to 2000 and served as Justice of the Peace, 2nd Ward, in 1957. A dedicated community servant, Jean continued to make "house calls" to her home bound clients for tax preparation well past her retirement. MEMBERSHIPS: Jean was a member of Nazareth Moravian Church where she played in the church orchestra. She was also a member of the Liberty Band in Bethlehem and Earl Held's All Girl Band. Jean was a well known Nazareth historian, with an interest in genealogy and family memorabilia. In later years she enjoyed spending time with her beloved dogs, Corky and Toby, in addition to tending her flower gardens. SURVIVORS: Jean is survived by one daughter, Kathleen Bretz; one son Richard Haupt; grandchildren, Joseph Bretz V and his wife Wendy, and Gretchen Bretz; great grandchildren, Josiah and Luke; one sister, Jo Anne Campbell and her husband James; nieces and nephews; and her beloved granddog Toby, who loved to share car rides with Jean. SERVICES: Burial will be held on Saturday, November 23 at 9:00 a.m. in Cedar Hill Memorial Park, Allentown. The procession will leave promptly at 8:30 a.m. from the Schmidt Funeral Home, 407 Belvidere St., Nazareth. A memorial service will follow the burial on Saturday, November 23 at 11:00 a.m. in the Nazareth Moravian Church, 4 S. Main St., Nazareth, with the Rev. Jeffrey Gehris presiding. Relatives and friends are invited to call Saturday from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. in the church. MEMORIALS: In lieu of flowers, memorials may be offered to a charity of one's choice, or to Nazareth Moravian Church.
