Obituary

Maurice C. "Maury" Heller, 78, of Nazareth passed peacefully onto eternity on Thursday, August 6, 2020. He was born in Wilson Borough on April 25, 1942, and was the son of the late Donald Hatch, the late, Marguerite (Haring) Heller, and predeceased by his stepfather, George Heller. Maury was a dedicated husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. He was the devoted husband to Katherine L. (Keck) Heller for 27 years.

Survivors include his son, David M. Heller and wife Patricia of Scottville MI; and daughter Rev. Marleah R. Doyle and husband Wayne of Coopersburg PA. He is also survived by 13 grandchildren; and 7 great grandchildren.

Maurice graduated from Phillipsburg High School in 1962 and attained his associate degree in electronics from Warren Technical School in 1964. He began his electronic technician career when he was employed by GE in Utica, New York. He was a Control Systems Analyst for Hoffman La Roche/ DSM for 35 years.

Maurice served his community in many ways. As a member of NASME (Nazareth Area Society of Model Engineers), he brought the holiday spirit to many families. Singing was one of Maurice's joys, as he was a member of St. Luke's Singers for 25 years helping to raise funds for St. Lukes Hospital's initiative, the In House Hospice Center. Being a member of St. John's UCC in Nazareth, he enjoyed singing with the St. Johnsmen's Choir. After fulfilling the term of a resigned board member, he continued to serve 14 more years as a Nazareth Area School District Board of Director. In 2019 he was honored with the "I Touch the Future Award" for his years of service to the Nazareth Area School District and his 14 years of service on the CIT Board of Directors. Maurice was a member of the Rotary Club of Nazareth from 2009-2018, receiving the Paul Harris Award for his contribution to aid Polio Plus in eradicating polio in Third World countries. Since 1990, Maurice had been a member of the Kiwanis Club of the Nazareth area. In 2015 he was honored with the George F. Hixson Fellowship Award, for his generosity and inspiration for his Kiwanis impact to improve the world One Child and One Community at a time. Maurice was a private pilot for 14 years, and as an EAA member he had flown 50 Young Eagles, children 8-17 years of age, impacting their future careers as pilots. As a member of DLARC (Delaware Lehigh Amateur Radio Club), he acquired his technician and general class licenses, allowing him to communicate worldwide with other HAM operators.

A private graveside service will be held with the family. Friends and relatives are invited to a memorial service on Saturday, August 15, 2020 at 1:00 pm, in Bethany United Methodist Church, 3801 Brookside Rd., Macungie PA. Arrangements are under the care of the Schmidt Funeral Home, 407 Belvidere St., Nazareth.
