Obituary

Revelation 21:4 He will wipe away all tears from their eyes. There will be no more death, no more grief, crying, or pain.

The Reverend Charles John Orem, 88, entered eternal life on May 21, 2025, at St. Luke's Anderson Campus, Easton, PA, surrounded by his loving family. He and his wife, Sylvia, celebrated nearly 62 years of marriage.

Charles was born on May 4, 1937, in Allentown, PA, to Charles A. and Emily (Conroy) Orem. He graduated from Allen High School, Kutztown Teacher's College, and the Lutheran Theological Seminary at Philadelphia. Charles's first pastoral call following his ordination in 1963 was serving Frieden's, McKeansburg, Lewistown Valley, and Tuscarora Lutheran congregations. He spent most of his 41-year career at Hope Lutheran Church in Tatamy, PA. After his retirement, Charles joined the congregation of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Easton, PA.

Charles was a proud Pennsylvania Dutchman and enjoyed exploring and maintaining his cultural heritage. He also was an avid reader and Civil War enthusiast. He enjoyed listening to music, watching Netflix, gardening, and vacationing in Dewey Beach and Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, with his extended family. In the spirit of St. Francis, he was a nature enthusiast and animal lover. He was a devoted and proud family man who found his greatest joy in spending time with his loved ones. He will be remembered for his compassion, intellect, silliness, and sense of humor.

The family would like to especially thank the nursing team and medical professionals at St. Luke's, Anderson, for their compassion, attentiveness, and sensitivity while Charles was in their care.

In addition to wife Sylvia, Charles is survived by four children: Jessica Flok (Bryan), Christopher Orem, Lynn Marie Kutch (Frank), and Andrea Roberts (Michael); eight grandchildren: Ashley, Caitlin, Bryan, Alexa, Jacob, Laura, Jonathan, and Emily; and four great-grandchildren Lilyanna, Christian, Paisley, and Genevieve.

A service will be held on Wednesday, May 28, 2025, at St. John's Lutheran Church, 330 Ferry St, Easton, PA 18042. The viewing will be from 9:30am-11am, with a service at 11am.
