Peter Schmey, 90, of Nazareth, passed away peacefully on Saturday, January 24, 2015, at Moravian Hall Square. He was the beloved husband of Madeleine Bloxham Mathias, who was his companion for 37 years and together they celebrated 10 years of marriage. Born September 2, 1924 in the Free City State of Danzig, Peter was a son of the late Paul W. and Charlotte (Schneider) Schmey. Peter was a 1943 graduate of Bloomfield High School in New Jersey, and received his BS in Metallurgical Engineering from Lafayette College in 1953. He honorably served in the US Army during WWII, in the European Theatre, The Battle of the Bulge and Counter Intelligence Corp, receiving three Bronze Service Stars and many other medals. He worked for several companies as a metallurgic engineer, including Easton Metal Powder Company. Peter had a passion for life, loved the outdoors, science fiction, and skiing. Also an avid scuba diver, he helped co-found Teach Tour Scuba Diving Company with locations in Bermuda, Trinidad and Tobago. He and his wife loved to travel, cook, play bridge, dance and entertain family and friends at amazing parties. An animal lover, he was known to take in stray wounded pets and nurse them back to health. Known for his smile, his kindness and helping hand, there are no words to express how much Peter will truly be missed. He was a member of Spot 5, The American Society for Metals, The International Oceanographic Foundation, Professional Association of Diving Instructors and many conservation groups. Peter is survived by his sister-in-law, Gloria Schmey; nephews Joern K. Schmey; Torr Peter Schmey, and Albert Schiavone; nieces Kiri Williams and Nyoma Schiavone; and many other friends and family. He was predeceased by his first wife Waltraud Schmey and his cherished brother, Joern Schmey. A Celebration of Life Service in Peter's memory will be announced in the near future. Arrangements are under the care and direction of the Schmidt Funeral Home, P.C., 407 Belvidere St., Nazareth. In lieu of flowers, contributions to the ASPCA or local humane society in Peter's name would be greatly appreciated
