Obituary

Richard R. Behler, 90 of Wind Gap, passed away Monday, March 5, 2018 while in Hospice care at his daughter's home in Marlton, NJ.  Born December 5, 1927 in Bethlehem, he was the last surviving of 11 children of the late William and Minnie Mills Behler. He was married to Ethel Altemus who passed away on Christmas day, 1997.

Dick was a veteran of the Korean War, serving in the US Army.  He was a very proud veteran who loved this country and remained patriotic throughout his life.  As a young man, he worked for City Motors in Bethlehem for many years before becoming a track worker for Conrail until retirement in 1992.  Most recently he spent time visiting and working, as a volunteer, at the Slate Belt Senior Citizen Center, Bangor.

Notably, Dick was a hardworking man who took great pleasure in cutting the grass and maintaining his home.  He firmly believed his work was never done.  Often he could be found riding his yellow Cub Cadet tractor around his yard and "elsewhere" while enjoying a good cigar.  But it was time spent with his beloved family that gave him the most enjoyment in life.

He is survived by his only child, daughter, Debra Green of Marlton, NJ; five grandchildren, Jenipher Weiss and husband Drew, Stephanie Green, Jonathan Green, Elizabeth Gervasi and husband Drew, and Alixandra Green; three great grandchildren, Emma Grace Weiss, Brayden and Brody Gervasi.  In addition to his parents and wife, Dick was predeceased by ten siblings, brothers William Jr., Harold, and Russell Behler, sisters, Dorothy Rader, Arlene Mahalka, Helen Beatty, Betty Smith, Barbara Hines, Joyce Burns and Frannie Quier.

Friends are invited to a viewing on Tuesday, March 13, from 11am till the time of service in the Schmidt Funeral Home, 202 West St., Wind Gap.  The funeral service will begin at 12 noon.  Richard will be laid to rest, with Military Honors, in Wind Gap Cemetery, Plainfield Township.
