Richard "Dick" Calder Hatch, 88, passed away peacefully on October 28, 2024, at Moravian Hall Square in Nazareth, Pennsylvania. He was born on August 20, 1936, in Boston, Massachusetts. Richard was the oldest son of Katherine (Calder) Hatch and Loranus Pendleton Hatch of Camden, Maine. He was the beloved husband of Deborah B. Hatch, who celebrated their 62 wedding anniversary on August 9. They enjoyed 52 beautiful years living in Northampton before joining the Moravian Hall community in Nazareth in July 2018.

Richard had a distinguished academic career, retiring from Muhlenberg College in 2001 after over 39 years of dedicated service. He was known for his commitment to excellence in education, visionary leadership, and the profound impact he had on countless students, faculty, and staff members. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree (Sc.B) from Brown University and his doctoral degree (Ph.D.) from the University of New Hampshire. Dr. Hatch joined the Chemistry Department at Muhlenberg College in 1962.

Throughout his tenure, Dr. Hatch held several influential positions, including Professor of Chemistry, Chair of the Chemistry Department, and Dean of the Faculty. He remained actively involved in the governance of the College. He served on numerous faculty committees focusing on academic policies, faculty matters, and student life. He taught many courses, one of his favorites being "The History of Science." In 1973, he received The Christian R. and Mary F. Lindback Foundation Award, presented annually to a faculty member in recognition of outstanding teaching and for stimulating the intellectual development of students at Muhlenberg College. Dr. Hatch always considered this to be the primary mission of the institution.

Richard was accomplished in his career and a caring man who cherished his loved ones. He enjoyed gardening or bird-watching with his beloved wife when he wasn't teaching. Richard was known for his warm heart, quick wit, and passion for the Philadelphia Eagles. He had a particular fondness for old-fashioned donuts and treasured many memories of camping with his entire family.

Richard is survived by his wife, Deborah Hatch; his brother, Ellis Hatch; his daughter, Anne (Hatch) Ferraro; and his son, Eric Hatch. He was deeply loved by his five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. A Celebration of Life with family and friends will be held on Monday, December 9, in Kortz Hall at Moravian Hall Square, located at 175 W. North Street, Nazareth, PA, from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm.
