Obituary

Sheldon Lee Johnson, age 73, of Wind Gap, PA passed away at home on Friday, September 6, 2019, after a prolonged battle with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD).

Born April 12, 1946 to the late Arvonia (Johnson) Smith of Wind Gap, PA, and Elmer Holden Sutton, of Ontario, NY, also deceased; he is survived by his wife of 49 years, Cynthia Hope (Burch) Johnson, of Wind Gap, PA; sons, Charles William Johnson, of Hemet, CA; and Wade Adam Johnson, of Kresgeville, PA; granddaughters, Erika Jo Johnson and Emma Rachel Johnson, both of Kresgeville, PA; sisters Hollye (Johnson) Schulman, of Cochecton, NY; Helen (Sutton) Schweiger, of Williamson, NY; and Melody Smith, of Mount Bethel, PA; brothers Elmer Holden Sutton, of Williamson, NY; and Shawn Smith, of Nazareth, PA; five aunts; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins descended of the Charles William and Nora Edith (Beck) Johnson homestead in Wind Gap, PA. He was preceded in death by his mother and father; brother John Sutton, of NY, and a still-born infant sister, of Wind Gap, PA.

A graduate of the Pen Argyl High School, Class of 1964, Sheldon served his country in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam-era. He left the service in 1968 as a Staff Sergeant, and returned home, where he worked for more than 45 years as a licensed electrician, and maintenance supervisor for the former Speck Plastics, Inc., of Belfast, PA, retiring in 2011. He was a long-time member of the Wind Gap American Legion, Post #724, and frequent participant in the post's honor guard and funeral details. An avid outdoorsman and athlete, he played football and ran track in high school, played church-league soft ball for several years as an adult; and passionately enjoyed hunting, fishing, and competitive shooting as a member of several local archery and black powder clubs. Sheldon also served for several years as Cub Master for the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) Cub Scout Pack #48, of Wind Gap, PA; and was active in both the Pen Argyl and Wind Gap Centennial celebrations. Other pastimes included bowling, roller-skating, and competitive dart throwing with the Western Pocono Dart League.

Sheldon could often be found helping friends and family, wiring or re-wiring their homes or businesses. He was handy with a set of tools – in the home, or under the hood of a car or truck – and had a talent for making helpful household or work-related items from plexiglass and/or wood. He was once approached by a NASCAR driver to design a fuel nozzle adaptor to minimize fuel spillage during pitstops. He was a die-hard NASCAR, Indy-car and Penn State football fan. He rarely ever missed a televised race, or Penn State football game, and could routinely be counted among the infield fans at the Pocono International Speedway.

A Celebration of Life gathering of family and friends will be scheduled at a later date. For more information, please contact a member of the family.  Arrangements are under the care of the Schmidt Funeral Home, 202 West St., Wind Gap.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests those who are inclined to do so donate in Sheldon's honor to the charity of their individual choosing.
